The plebian is obviously and trivially Ned Beatty in Superman, although it should read "Are we going to Addis Ababa Mr. Loo-thore?"

The erudite, shockingly, turns out to be Barney Fife.

Which means the connection has somehting to do with goofy sidekicks.
